Unlike older turbocharged BMW engines that use an Air-to-Air cooling system(think Front Mount Intercooler setups on N20/N54/N55) the B series engines use a water-to-air cooling system.

This works by using a cooling system, independent of your engine coolant to cool the charge air coming into your engine. The compressed air coming out of your turbo is quite hot and needs to be cooled down. Without cooling, it would cause knock and reduce power. To cool it, the air passes through a charge cooler that is built into your Intake Manifold. The Intake Manifold has the air pass over a set of cooling fins that are filled with constantly flowing coolant. These fins pull the heat from the air before it enters your engine.

The heat is absorbed by the coolant and sent to a front mounted heat exchanger(aka radiator) to cool the coolant back down so it can then absorb more heat from the charge cooler. The problem with the system is that the factory heat exchanger is not large enough to handle the cooling needs. This leads the coolant in the system to get hot and  unable to cool your charge air effectively. This causes heat soak, like on traditional turbo charged engines.

The TCM heat exchanger aims to solve this problem. It does this in two ways, the first is by being a larger and more dense radiator. This allows more coolant to get in contact with the air passing through, cooling the coolant more effectively. The heat exchanger is than significantly larger than stock, allowing more coolant in the system. With more coolant, the heat from the charge air is dispersed over a larger volume, preventing the air from heating up. Thus preventing heat soak, and keeping your charge temps cold. All this creates more sustained power and preventing your engine from going into limp mode. Everyday becomes boost weather.
